BASIC READING SKILLS AND COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES
It has been said that “The Foundation is Everything.” This is particularly true of this Fall 2020 class in which Zoe Sippel, certified reading specialist, together with Lorraine Gerstl and Margie Lotz, will teach the Fundamentals of Reading and Invaluable Comprehension Strategies.
First, we will assess each student’s present levels of reading and spelling to ensure that each participant will achieve the greatest benefit from individualized attention. The children will then be placed in groups to match their initial skills. Guided reading groups will focus on decoding, sight word recognition, and learning the patterns of the English language. Reading books at each child’s instructional level will strengthen decoding skills, fluency, and reading comprehension strategies, which will be specifically taught. The children will work not only in groups, but they will independently practice their spelling, writing, and reading under the guidance of three experienced master teachers.
